“Finding Sky” is the first book in the Nicki Valentine Mystery series by Susan O’Brien. This is Ms. O’Brien’s first mystery novel and it has been nominated for the prestigious Agatha Award for Best First Novel. Ms. O’Brien has a M.A. in forensic psychology and is a registered private investigator in Virginia.

In “Finding Sky,” Nicki Valentine is a widow with two small children who is training to be a Private Investigator. When her best friend’s adoption is in jeopardy due to the birth mother’s disappearance, Nicki agrees to help find her. The search involves her in gang violence, teen issues and questionable medical practices.

I laughed and sympathized at Nicki’s efforts to balance raising two small children by herself, with the play groups, and camps, while trying to keep the house somewhat presentable and attend class. I read about parents desperate to adopt. I learned more about the issue of gang violence. This is a funny mystery with a serious side. The balance between the two makes this book special.

The next book in this series “Sky High” is expected out in September.

Five stars out of five.
